The community of El Portillo is 7 miles from the town of San Juan del Río Coco and was founded in 1940. It is a community which diversifies its production with corn, beans, casava, plantains, bananas, cattle, pigs, poultry and coffee grown in association with fruit, plantain and other trees. The Galeano family have been the foundation of this community with their leadership and donation of land for the school and church. A son of the Galeano´s is part of the coordinating group of the communities which are organizing. The most important attribute of this community is working together to face collective challenges. “If the road washes out, we do not wait for the mayor´s office, we move, the same if there is a person who is sick, we carry the person as a group to the hospital”. Their coffee is a witness to that fine relationship between the economic force of a family and collective community actions.
